How To Get Your Lips Pink

I'm not a lipstick person. I almost never wear it, and I find wild violet or lilac-colored lips especially distracting when speaking to other women; should I listen or perform CPR? But my friend and T&C's Assistant Beauty Editor Kate Erickson tells me I simply haven't found a shade I like. I think she sees finding me one as the ultimate professional challenge.

First, Kate wondered if I had anything positive to say about lipstick. Maybe one thing: my Mother used to keep a special pale pink lip color in the bottom of her white lizard clutch, the fancy one she'd bring to country club cocktail parties in the summer, or to dinners during a vacation in the tropics. Whenever she'd let me hold that clutch, I'd try to sneak an application of this lipstick. It was the chicest shade of glimmering pale pink with little flecks of white gold, a conservative feminine color and the perfect flattering accent to a golden tan. Putting it on made me feel like a young lady. But my best friends at the time were not assistant beauty editors, so I have no recollection of the brand.

Then Kate told me that Laura Mercier was coming out with a shade of Crème Smooth Lip Colour named 60's Pink. I do love combing through archival volumes of T&C from the 1960s for fashion and beauty inspiration, so this struck an immediate chord.

Boy, is it groovy—in girly seashell pink, subtle but with just the right amount of shimmer, the sort of thing Twiggy wore in Yardley advertisements. I will be donning 60's Pink from now through the summer-and in the tropics, if I ever get there. Oh, and Mom, I'm buying you one when it hits shelves on March 1st.
